Day 44: West Wendover, NV Elevation: 4,315

Miles:  104.25
Average Speed:  12.74
Max Speed:   25.35
Total Miles:  1,564

I'll take the hills any day over the damn time trial I did today - essentially flat and straight.  I'm completely ergless tonight. The ride promised to be a pretty boring ride and I didn't think I could blog anything interesting so by virtue of the photos following you can all ride along - and be bored.

6:47 am

7:28 am                                                        8:17 am

9:46 am - Looking south

Stopped at Delle at mile 70 - gas station & convenience store - snacks & water

10:41 am - Looking south

Rest stop at mile 54 - lucky to be able to get the road runner on film

Looking west from rest stop

Not that restful

Looking south from rest stop - siesta at rest stop for sleep, food & to avoid some sun & wind - left rest stop about 2:30 pm.  As I was leaving I asked a young family loaded down with bikes and camping gear to drop some water for me at mile marker 20 which they readily agreed to do. They live in Incline Village at Tahoe and the guy works for Tusker Trail, professional trekkers.  They take groups to Kilimanjaro summit, horse treks in the Mongolian steppe and one trip peer year to the Everest base camp including the Khumbu Icefall.  Wow!  See http://www.tusker.com/.

2:53 pm - looking south

3:53 pm - Looking north

5:05 pm - Looking north

6:18 pm - Looking north

A second rest stop at mile 10 - 30 min power nap stretched out on a table in the shade - heavenly

7:37 pm - Looking north

Jesus Christ!

West Wendover is Nevada - 7:25 pm Pacific Time

Chuck & Barb are on their way home after a sojourn in the west primarily to visit relatives and friends
and they arrived in West Wendover tonight as well.  We enjoyed dinner together (their treat) and shared tales of our various adventures, and they gave me a bottle of Paul's cabernet - real treat - and even if I weren't ergless I would have to take tomorrow off to off the wine.

  1. What a journey! The salt flats look unforgiving and somewhat other-worldly.

Glad you are taking a day off after that leg of the trip to enjoy the cab and let your muscles recover.

Thoroughly enjoying the photo diary and your commentary as well.

All is well here - no snakes or scorpions at least. Keep an eye out for those warning signs - who knows what else is out there.

    Stay safe.

  2. Glad my Dad and Barb treated you right while you passed each other. 100 miles of mostly nothing, no wonder you need a day off!

I have really enjoyed the blog. It's like going along with you without having to do the work. I just get the spoils of your trip.

    Stay safe!

  4. Wow, 104 miles! Looks like you were eager to put that barrenness behind you. So glad that you had family waiting for you after that sojourn. Enjoy the rest and the Cabernet.

  5. Barb and I are in Ogallala, NE tonite. First rain of our 23 day trip between Laramie, WY and NE state line. I hesitate to tell you this, but when we gassed up, we noticed a guy about our age sitting at a small table in the store with 3 hotdogs and 2 qts of coke in front of him. Then noticed a bicycle outside pulling a little 2-wheel luggage carrier. Turns out the guy began his bike trip in Daytona Beach, FL, and pedaled to Santa Maria, CA, then up to Sacramento, Carson City, Salt Lake, etc. He is on his way home to Chicago. I was so stunned I forgot to ask him how long he'd been on the trip or how he found the stretch across the salt desert. He also was having a little trouble with hoarseness. So if it's a little crazy to bike across the country alone, you can take solace that there's even crazier folks out there. Take care.
