Day 52B: Lovelock, NV Elevation: 3,975

Miles:  73.70
Average Speed:  11.30
Max Speed:  21.89
Total Miles:  1,884

How to completely wreck a good start on a beautiful morning - put 13.64 miles of "rumble patches" in front of boyer - I've invented new curses that frighten even me.

After that though it was a pretty good ride, though boring - essentially flat, hot (98 this afternoon) & windy.  Passed two road crews in Nevada, one paving, the other inspecting bridges - supervising engineers on both crews were women, neither from Nevada.  Don't know why I find that noteworthy.

The Burning Man starts this week in the Black Rock Desert, about 50 miles north of here as the crow flies.  Locals say the entire area, even Lovelock, turns weird and the sheriff's deputies can't keep up.

always the same - always different

the same, and the different

Part of the Rye Patch reservoir on the Humboldt River

Can't remember if this is the same or different

This tire blew just ahead of me off a travel trailer.  The guy was in the left lane in traffic so I wasn't threatened.  You can see the myriad wires that have been my bane with flats.

definitely different

Sonja mentioned prisons - this is the Graystone Hotel outside Lovelock

The Humboldt has been transformed from a crystal clear stream back near Wells to a pea-green, slow moving river at Lovelock

Rest day tomorrow then last day on the interstate, which I've been on since Park City I think.

Happy Birthday, Nic!

  2. I think that it is noteworthy because you are a man, not to be too sexist. I must admit I had to google "Burning Man". It sounds like your kind of event - to build the ideal city; too bad that it is 50+ miles out of the way. I would imagine that the event can run amok pretty quickly. I hope that you enjoyed your rest day before heading for the Sierras. Take Care, Ann
