Day 16: Midland, SD Elevation: ?

Miles:  62.10
Average Speed:  11.79
Max Speed:  35.5  & this is as fast as I care to go
Total Miles:  ~490 - failed to look before logging on & bike is about a block away

Pretty good riding again today.  Left Pierre early with a gale blowing through the river valley.  Once I made the plateau all was calm until nearly noon and by then I was almost to Midland.  Lots of hills today.  In fact it was all hills.  At about the 50 mile mark I had to finish a hill walking the bike.  I expect there'll be many more like that to come.

These are some shots along the road.  I'll bet I didn't see more than half dozen houses in more than 60 miles.

Midland's Main Street.  Several vacant buildings and a few for sale.

Alas, there is no room in the inn - peripatetic wheat harvesters are in town.  They ley me pitch the tent out back behind the shed.

Heading for Wall tomorrow if the weather holds and I sure hope it does.

  1. looks like you're really getting into the boondocks. the hills whisper of their larger friends to the west. I remember approaching the mountains driving out west was my favorite part of the drive as a kid. I hope the weather holds for you and have fun in Wall!

  3. You are now on the doorstep to the West. I think the terrain is beautiful and your photos make me feel like I'm there, but without all the effort. The picture of the long and winding road with just your shadow says it all. Thinking of you!
