Day 48: Elko, NV Elevation: 5,067

Miles:  51.40
Average Speed:  11.83
Max Speed:  28.87
Total Miles:  1,676

A pretty good day today.  The roads continue to be excellent and had most of the miles done by noon to beat the heat & wind.  No significant hills today and some road construction allowed me to have a lane to myself for about 10 miles.  Implemented elements of your ideas to keep this old body working a while longer, including another rest day in Wells.  No more big days.  There are just two 75 mile stretches between here and CA and I'll try to break them into two shorter runs.  Thanks for your help - honey on oatmeal is really good - wonder why I never tried that before.

Northern terminus of the Ruby Range at Wells

Peaks are something over 11,300 ft

Hiway is routed around the Rubies - this looking back east

Southern terminus of the Rubies some 30 miles later

I think this is Starr Valley - several little rills flowing through here creating an oasis - wonder if this is beginning of the Humboldt River

Enough water for cattle and some crops - mostly hay

Devil's Gate - another one - don't see a gate though

Imagine that after a snowfall

Easy ride to Carlin tomorrow.  Take care.

  1. Glad you cut it back to Carlin. Battle Mountain is a place too far. If you're lucky you may see some wild horses. Saw a small bunch when I was hitching back in '65. Tunnel just before Carlin. Not very long.

  2. I agree with the posts about food, water and rest. The primary issue is just keeping up with all the calories and fluids. Bonking is a horrible feeling. On one ride, I came within an eighth of an inch of asking a random chubby 5 year old for some of his potato chips. Given I was in my riding shorts, I would have been arrested for stalking for sure.

Guys on the tour have to meticulously track their calorie intake and weight to maintain their energy. Since they are tired and fatigued, if they are left to using their normal thirst and hunger signals to determine intake, they fall hopelessly behind and fade from the peloton.

    What an inspiring journey

  3. So glad that metabolic bump is behind you. Very impressive country.

Keep the calories and fluids coming.

    Stay safe.

  5. What I recall from this stretch of NV was supermax prisons. You just see the tops of them lurking over a rise. Heed the signs that say don't pick up hitchhickers.
