Had some business in Elko this morning so didn't start til around noon. Road good and a little downhill but the wind, fully anticipated, slowed me down. It's really interesting how the changes directions and velocity in these canyons - like a whirlwind and the sages are the dervishes. Following the Humboldt River for the most part guarantees an easy ride.
I hope we're not going over that mountain
Entering Humboldt River canyon from the valley
These are bird nests, I hope. No birds around though.
".... the small streams and the largest rivers
flow through valleys to the sea."
flow through valleys to the sea."
The train goes through the mountain...
...the river goes around the mountain...
...and, damn it, the road goes through the mountain, too. I did a sprint through here and only one vehicle overtook me in the tunnel - sounds like a 747 coming right down on your head. I hate sprints with all my being.
It seems I'll have the pleasure of meeting up with Dave S., a friend from my work, former work, in SF after Labor Day - I'll look forward to that very much.
Over Emigrant Pass, ~6,100 ft, and on to Battle Mountain tomorrow.
You are probably over Emigrant pass by now. Looks like you had a 1200 foot ascent - hope it went well. Thinking of you, Ann
ReplyDeleteWind is my least favorite obstacle on a bike. I always feel like it is against me. It's hard to claim that someone just moved that climb in front of you. And with any climb, one is guaranteed the descent even if it goes by too quick. The wind however is mercurial and always out to get you. Just like the man.
ReplyDeleteRest those legs and go out and crush the bastard.
