Day 33: Craig, CO Elevation: 6140

Miles:  45.07
Average Speed:  9.38
Max Speed:  27.77
Total Miles:  1,129

The El Rio Restaurante in Baggs is the best ever.  Had huge chilaquilles for breakfast and accounts in part for late start.   Overly confident after yesterday's long ride accounts for the rest.

I've been looking forward to Colorado

Colorado - you can see the road rising into the hills at the horizon, just left of center - it was 11 miles away

The day turned really sour shortly after starting out on the plain.  The shoulder disappeared, completely.  The road surface was really rough with bone-jarring cracks every 10-15 yards for 40 miles.  There were potholes and in places chunks of pavement missing.  And where there were drops of 20-30 feet just inches off the pavement there were no guard rails.  And the wind was fierce.  Had to pedal downhill in some places to make progress and really struggle to keep from being blown into traffic.  I'll only be in Colorado a few days - I hope they're better than today.

Interesting rock formation called Fortification Rocks - volcanic uplift

Fortification Rocks - parallel view

A little (more) local history with obligatory bullet hole

2/3 of the land public!  WOW!

Don't know the name of this little creek but I hope the road follows its valley all the way to Craig - really hope

Sign on campground office door - should make for interesting middle-of-the-night trip to bathroom

Many folks have said they are not able to post comments while others seem to have no problem - a mystery I would like to solve.  In the meantime, I changed some of the blog default parameters which should facilitate comments.  Please try again if you feel like it.

Patrick & friend Dave summited Mount Ritter today and are off the mountain safely and headed home.  CONGRATULATIONS PATRICK & Dave!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  1. Since you make a 90 degree right turn onto a US Highway to start tomorrow, let's hope the wind and road conditions will be improved.

  2. Beautiful and rugged landscapes.

Congrats to Patrick and Dave - Glad they had success and are headed safely home.

Cooler and drier here. A relief after all the heat and humidity. A low of 50 is predicted for tonight.

Keep an eye out for critters large and small.

    Stay safe.
