Day 35: Maybell, CO Elevation: 5920

Miles:  31.25
Average Speed:  12.51
Max Speed:  29.84
Total Miles:1,167  (includes riding around Craig a little)

Rested a day in Craig after the hellish ride from Baggs.  Have been really cold at night (42 F); even wearing everything I have along, still freezing and not much sleep.  So, I bought a K-Mart special sleeping bag and sent the fleece sack & bivvy sack home, along with some other junk I've been lugging around and not using.  The bag is huge & doesn't stuff well but at least I hope to be warm tonight.

Easy ride today - good road and very little traffic.  Maybell is a tiny little town on the Yampa that allows camping in the town park.  Lou's cafe opens at 7 AM so I hope to be on the road to Dinosaur by 7:47 AM.

From the top of the hill going west out of Craig looking back east.  Craig in the valley.  Steamboat Springs is in those mountains in the distance, just 45 miles away.

Ran into this guy ~ half way to Maybell.  He works for Geokinetics and is setting seismic devices to locate oil & gas deposits.  They excite the underlying structures either with dynamite or "thumper trucks" which roam over the high prairie, lower a giant foot-pad to the ground and vibrate it, probably with something like a pile driver.  He didn't know what company hired Geokinetics.

Yampa river & valley coming into Maybell.  Lots of green fields around here - a welcome change from the dry sage.

And welcome to the new commenters, or commentators as the case may be.

  1. that's great the ride was better today. does that guy's hard hat say "shooter" on it? country around maybell looks really pleasant. I hope lou's breakfast is satisfying. Really looking forward to your arrival in california, you're really making great progress. stay safe see you soon.
